Hypnotherapy FAQ SHEET

Here are the answers to some of the most common questions about hypnotherapy.

Q: How does hypnotherapy work?

A: Hypnotherapy changes the way you think at the subconscious level so negative thought patterns can be transformed into healthy beliefs and positive thinking. This results in healing, extraordinary progress, and expanding potential so you can rewrite your story and transform your life.

Q: Will I lose control?

A: Hypnosis is used to help access the subconscious mind. We’ve all had occasions when we’ve driven home from work and then realized we can’t remember the last ten minutes of the journey -- that’s because we’ve entered the alpha state, which is the same state we go into when in hypnosis. You are still in complete control and have your full faculties.

Q: Will hypnotherapy have any long-lasting effects?

A: Hypnosis itself will not cause any long-lasting effects as coming out of it is much like waking up. In terms of the therapy itself, the aim is to provide beneficial, transformative and long-lasting effects. The therapist wants to help the client improve their quality of life and/or overcome the obstacles standing in the way of their best life.

Q: Is it safe?

A: So long as the client has been honest about pre-existing conditions including epilepsy, personality disorders and psychosis (which are contra-indicated) and has declared any suicidal or deep trauma events so that the therapist is confident they are working within the scope of their experience and capabilities, then hypnosis is safe. A therapist's mantra is “first do no harm.”

Q: Can I get "stuck" in hypnosis?

A. No! You have complete control the whole time. You can talk, move your body, get a tissue, and even get up (clients have had to stop to use the bathroom before!). If we are on a virtual platform and have a technical issue that causes our connection to be disconnected you may drift into sleep if you're really relaxed, but eventually, you'll notice that you're not hearing my voice and open your eyes.

Q: How does it feel to be hypnotized?

A: Being hypnotized is like being in a deeply relaxed state. The feeling is similar to those moments before drifting off to sleep. The experience feels different for different people. Some people feel a floating sensation, some do not. Others may feel sleepy, some do not. Most people feel relaxed and at ease. What's most important is to know that how you feel isn't an indicator of how effective it is. Regardless of what it feels like - it's working.

Q: I don’t want to be humiliated like I’ve seen with stage hypnosis; will it be like that?

A: No, absolutely not! Stage hypnosis is done for the audience’s enjoyment. The main thing to remember is that in hypnotherapy, the keyword is “therapy” i.e. it is designed to help the client, certainly not to humiliate or entertain. Also, sessions are conducted in a private setting with complete confidentiality, compassion, and empathy.

Q: Can someone be hypnotized without their knowledge?

A: No. Hypnosis is a consensual process. Nobody can be hypnotized without their full knowledge, agreement, and willing participation. Hypnotherapy requires the client to trust the therapist.

Q: What if I don't go “deep" enough?

A. Don't worry about how deep you go. It's really not important. The depth of trance is not linked to results at all. So don't get stuck on "Am I deep enough?" Just tell yourself the truth - "This is working" and it will absolutely work. Just know that it is effective.

Q: How do you put someone into hypnosis?

A: It’s a simple process where the client is requested to roll their eyes up as if they were looking into their own eyebrows and to hold that for three breaths before closing their eyes and relaxing them. The client is then taken through some exercises to help them to enter a deeper hypnotic state. The process takes about five minutes. Hypnosis works by creating a burst of brain waves that are the same as when you're in REM sleep. That's what allows you to access the subconscious mind. It's very easy and anyone can do it. You'll see for yourself when you do it too!

Q: What happens before a session?

A: Before a session, I will spend time with the client asking a series of questions to understand what effect the issue they want to deal with has on their lives, about their childhood and significant life experiences, and about what they would like their life to be like. The conversation is designed to help set the client up for success.

Q: What happens during a session?

A: The client is first guided into a relaxed state, similar to a guided meditation. This relaxed state is referred to as hypnosis, where the client can easily discover root causes and become receptive to positive suggestions.

When in a relaxed or hypnotic state, the client will be guided to childhood scenes that relate to the problem they wish to overcome to help them understand the belief they developed about themselves. I then help the client to let go, use some therapeutic techniques including a reframe, and then do a transformation. The transformation is created using the information provided by the client about what their life would be like without the problem. Through a selection of advanced tools using specific language and mental images that assist the client with the issue they wish to resolve, they can access memories and harmful beliefs that their mind has locked onto from past experiences and make discoveries and connections to reframe old thought patterns and release unwanted emotions and habits.

In the last 15 minutes of the session, a personalized recording is made to reinforce the work, while the client relaxes and listens. The recording of the duration of the program is shared before the end of the session and will be listened to daily for the remainder of the program or as directed.

Q: What happens after a session?

A: After a session, the client is required to listen to the recording daily throughout the program. This is essential because the subconscious mind learns through repetition. By consistently listening, new neural pathways can be created, transforming previous beliefs and patterns into new, positive beliefs, thoughts, and behaviors. I will check in with you within 24 hours, and it's important that the client continues to listen to the recording as directed.

Q: What if I need or want another session?

A: The session is a part of the 3-month hypnotherapy coaching program, that is designed for powerful breakthroughs and to create positive transformations in your life.

Q: What if I live far away or can’t easily come to see you?

A: No problem. Hypnotherapy is just as effective online as it is face-to-face so long as the therapist can see the client throughout the session. I use a secure virtual platform for the session, so as long as you have a computer, a tablet, or a smartphone, we can make it work. You do not need to download any apps or software.  All instructions are provided.

Q: What should I expect from an in-person session?

A. For an in-person session at my office, we create a safe, warm, comfortable space where there will be no interruptions or distractions.  Sessions are specifically designed for you.

Q: Is there anything special I need to do to prepare for a session?

A: Yes. For online sessions, you need to make sure that you can create a space that is warm, comfortable, and free from interruptions/disturbances. Wear comfortable clothing and try to make sure you don’t have any taxing commitments immediately after the session or for the remainder of the day. Some people find the sessions emotionally draining, feel quite tired and benefit from having time to process afterward.

Q: What if I think I already know the reasons behind my issue?

A. What makes my sessions so amazing is that even if you think you know the reason, you see it in a completely new way. That's what allows you to change the meaning and, ultimately, change your beliefs. And for many clients, they go back to scenes that are totally different than what they expected. Just relax and trust that your subconscious mind will show you exactly what you need to see.

Q: What if I go back to scenes that are painful or scary?

A. If you go back to scenes from your life that are related to things like sexual or physical abuse,. or other trauma, it's important to remember that you are not reliving that scene; you are simply reviewing it and that you are safe. I will support you and create a safe space for you to describe, express your emotions and heal.

Q: How much does it cost?

A: Please book a 20-minute consultation call with me to discuss how I can assist you with your specific needs and expected costs. The value of the investment, where you can transform your life quickly and comfortably, is rarely disputed.
